Think You’re O.K. to Drive the Morning After? Think Again!

After a late night out drinking and celebrating with friends, you do the right thing and take a cab or an Uber home. The next morning you wake up, and even though you have a splitting headache and still feel a little drunk, you manage to make some coffee and force down some food. Off to the office you go.

But wait! Should you be worried about getting pulled over for a DUI the morning after? It may not have occurred to you, but it should!

Depending on various factors, such as your weight, age, how much food you consumed the night before and how rapidly you made those drinks disappear, it’s a very real possibility that when you head off to the office the next morning, you are still too legally drunk to drive. Once you have consumed alcohol, your blood alcohol content (referred to as BAC) lowers by a rate of approximately 0.15 percent per hour. If you are out until 2:00 in the morning and your BAC is .2 percent and you wake up at 8:00 a.m. the next morning, your BAC would still be around .110, which in all states, is over the legal limit.

Of course, every individual metabolizes alcohol in different ways, but when in doubt, even if it is the next morning after a night of drinking, play it safe and consider calling that cab or that Uber to take you to work.
